A mature Saint-Emilion from one of the appellation's top sites: Beau-Sejour Becot sits on the famous limestone plateau west of the town, with some clay mixed in, and was reinstated as a Premier Grand Cru Classe in 1996. The 2005 comes from one of Bordeaux's truly great modern vintages, a Merlot-led blend (around 70 percent Merlot, with Cabernet Franc and a little Cabernet Sauvignon) that was famously massive and structured in its youth. Two decades on, it's moving into its prime, with the cedar, spice and dark fruit of well-aged Saint-Emilion. Decant it, or hold it longer if you like; either way this is classic right-bank claret from a benchmark year.
