A mature Right Bank classic from the Bécot family's Premier Grand Cru Classé B estate on the Saint-Émilion plateau, this 2014 has reached an eloquent middle age. The 2014 vintage was a saving-grace year on the Right Bank, late-ripening and structured, and Beau-Séjour Bécot's limestone-rich plateau site delivered one of its finest efforts: macerated red cherry and wild strawberry framed by tobacco, savory herb, and the cool mineral signature of the bedrock below. The Merlot-dominant blend (87% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc) shows filigree tannin and beautifully integrated oak. Bottled by the négociant rather than at the château, this is a chance to drink a serious classified Saint-Émilion in its drinking window. Open now through the early 2030s.

Antonio Galloni

89 points

"The 2014 Beau-Séjour Bécot has a commendable bouquet with brambly red fruit, damp loam, tobacco and pressed rose petal scents. It takes a bit of coaxing, but it reveals fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins and fleshy, fine delineation. It lacks complexity and personality, so the finish feels monotone and doesn't tempt you back for more. This tasted much better in 2018, so I speculate there is some deterioration in the intervening period? Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting." —Neal Martin

"Fragrant, floral, dark fruit notes. Tender tannins and freshness on the palate. Supple texture. Long, clean finish. Well-handled extraction."

Wine Spectator

93 points

"This delivers a vibrant core of raspberry and boysenberry preserves, freshened with hints of mint, savory and tobacco, all carried by fine threads of charcoal through the finish. Reveals a lovely tug of sweet earth at the end. Best from 2022 through 2032."

Wine Enthusiast

"Barrel Sample. While this powerful wine does have considerable over-extraction, it also has swathes of ripe berry fruits. There is enough fruity richness that it should eventually dominate the tough structure and harmonize; it just needs time."
