Montrose in 2018 is the vintage that made even the estate itself reach for comparisons: they read it as the fruit of 2009 crossed with the precision of 2016, which is about as close as a Second Growth gets to saying "this one's special." The reason is in the berries — roughly 20% smaller than average, so the skin-to-juice ratio tilted hard toward the skins and the free-run juice came in extraordinarily concentrated. From that the team assembled 61 batches of free-run wine plus six of high-quality press wine, blended out at 72% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a splash of Petit Verdot. The heart of it is Terrace 4, the original site at the epicentre of the vineyard, where the first vines went in back in 1815, gravel and sand over water-holding clay at depth — the estate calls it a promised land for Cabernet Sauvignon, and on the evidence here that isn't marketing. Worth noting too that this is a Saint-Estèphe farmed with real conviction: Montrose has been converting to organic viticulture since 2014, and beyond the vines the property holds 35 hectares of green areas — old forests, thickets, hedges and meadows. A serious, built-to-age Médoc from one of the great recent Bordeaux years.
