Chateau Sociando-Mallet sits 10km north of Pauillac in the Haut-Medoc, and it's long been regarded as the equal of many classed growths, a genuine Bordeaux sleeping giant. The modern estate was built by Jean Gautreau, who bought the run-down property in 1969 and spent fifty years turning it into one of the Medoc's great overachievers. The 2000 is a celebrated vintage and now a fully mature back-vintage Medoc, the kind of classically-built claret that rewards patience with savory, resolved complexity. From a private collection, this is old Bordeaux drinking right in its sweet spot.

"The 2000 Sociando-Mallet has long been a controversial wine, and a couple of recent encounters explain why it was omitted from the vertical at the château. It is simply underripe and vegetal on the nose, a simple case of picking too early. That vegetal element translates across onto the palate and mars what ought to have been a great Sociando-Mallet. Caveat emptor. Tasted from a bottle from my own personal cellar." —Neal Martin

"This is a beautiful wine and certainly one of the great sleepers of the vintage. I originally predicted that this wine would be at full maturity between 2007 and 2028, but I would push that back by a good 4-5 years. Still inky/purple, with notes of acacia flowers intermixed with wet rocks, black currants, and blueberries, the wine is full-bodied, displays no real evidence of any oak, and offers up terrific concentration, texture, and length. For those who bought this beauty at $30-35 when it was available, this was a terrific buy, and it should continue to evolve for 20+ years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

"Very dark smudgy mulberry colour. Very luscious on the nose and very Cabernet. But although it promises to be very thick, in fact it is delightfully limpid and luscious and fluid. Really a great success! You could enjoy this cocktail of fruit and minerals already but it should also reward keeping." —Jancis Robinson MW

"Very smoky, with charcoal, almost lamblike aromas. Full-bodied, chewy and very rich, with a thick and velvety finish. Stylish and decadent young wine."

More about Chateau Sociando-Mallet

Sociando-Mallet is an unclassified estate which easily performs at a "cru classé" level, and even over certain 2nd and 3rd growth wines. If you dig the firm, gravelly style of left-bank Cabernet Sauvignon, you'll hard pressed to find a better value.
