What is this wine?

Ungrafted is a modern Chilean wine project dedicated to showcasing high-quality fruit from ungrafted vines—rare in a world where phylloxera devastated most vineyards. This bottling is 100% Carménère, Chile’s signature grape, sourced from sites in the Maipo Valley. Winemaking emphasizes freshness and purity, highlighting varietal character over heavy oak.

Why get this wine?

Carménère can often be heavy and overripe, but Ungrafted’s version is vibrant and balanced, showing the grape’s potential for elegance. It delivers authenticity and typicity at a very fair price, making it a great introduction to Carménère beyond the usual big brands. The “ungrafted” identity also sets it apart, offering a direct connection to Chile’s rare phylloxera-free heritage.

What does this wine taste like?

Juicy and medium-bodied, with black cherry, plum, and blackberry fruit layered with herbal notes of bell pepper, tobacco leaf, and spice. Silky tannins and fresh acidity keep it lively.

When should you drink this wine?

Perfect now through 2027. Pair with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or smoky barbecue.

"The 2023 Carménère Ungrafted hails from Isla de Maipo. Aged for 10 months in used barrels and oak foudres, this purple wine reveals aromas of ash, white pepper, plums and blackberry against a backdrop of cedar. Dry, juicy and compact due to its fine, faintly reactive tannins, it flows with energy and a polished texture. This long-lasting, flavorful Carménère is crafted in a sincere style." —Joaquín Hidalgo
