Don't call it Burgundian — but the comparison keeps coming up. Clos Bellane is a small biodynamic estate in Valreas, one of the named villages of Cotes du Rhone Villages, run by Stephane Vedeau in the high northern reaches of the Vaucluse. Elevation is the secret: Vedeau's vineyards sit higher than most of the Southern Rhone, which translates to cooler nights, longer hang time, and a fresher, more lifted style than the usual baked-fruit Cotes du Rhone cliche — hence the inevitable (and somewhat exasperating) Burgundy comparisons. The 2024 Valreas Rouge is Grenache-led and aged in concrete and old foudre, all the better to keep the fruit pure. Bright cherry, raspberry, crushed flowers, garrigue, peppercorn, warm stone. Supple, silky, lifted, food-friendly, drinking beautifully right out of the gate.

He converted to organic and now produces 100% Grenache wines that are silky, mineral, and utterly graceful—proof that you don't need Burgundy credentials to make elegant wine. The finest expressions come from respecting the grape and the place it calls home.
