This is a traditionally made Barbaresco you don't have to lock away for a decade. Paolin's core comes from the Basarin cru in Neive, a south-facing site of calcareous marl with lots of sand, and that soil gives fragrant, elegant Nebbiolo that's approachable young. Paolin isn't a single-vineyard wine. Parcels from across the appellation go into it, and it's the gentlest, most fruit-forward of the estate's Barbarescos, which makes it the natural way into a house that otherwise rewards patience. None of the winemaking is rushed, though: about 40 days in cement tanks, then 18 months in big 30-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks from Stockinger and six more months in bottle. The name runs in the family. The estate is named for Luigi Minuto, who founded it in 1913 and was known as "Luisin," or "little Luigi," in Piedmontese. Paolin means "little Paolo" and honors Roberto Minuto's father, who was six years old when the family started releasing wine under its own label. The 2021 vintage helps too: a cool spring and a warm, steady summer meant slow, even ripening, and the result is elegant, vertical Nebbiolo with the tension to age.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"The 2021 Barbaresco Paolin shows all the pedigree of the vintage in its dark, layered personality. Black cherry, plum, new leather, spice, tobacco, dried flowers and coffee are nicely amplified. Broad and layered, the 2021 is an absolute delight." —Antonio Galloni

Kerin O'Keefe

92 points

"Woodland berry, hay, botanical herb and dark spice aromas escape the glass on the fragrant 2021 Cascina Luisin Paolin. Elegantly structured and bright, the palate offers tart red cherry, blood orange, white pepper and star anise while taut, close-grained tannins bright acidity keep it balanced. Drink 2027–2036." —Kerin O’Keefe

More about Cascina Luisin

Cascina Luisin is about as old-school as Barbaresco gets: long macerations, big old casks, and wines that ask for patience and repay it handsomely. The family farms some of the most famous ground in the appellation, including Rabajà and Asili.

Luigi Minuto founded the estate in 1913, and it has stayed in the family ever since. His great-grandson Roberto Minuto runs it today, with the family handling everything from the vineyards to the cellar. The farm sits in the Rabajà area of Barbaresco and covers only seven or eight hectares, planted to the Langhe's classic varieties: Nebbiolo above all, plus Barbera, Dolcetto and Arneis. Production is around 30,000 bottles a year.

The vineyard work is done by hand, and the winemaking is resolutely traditional. Fermentations use native yeasts, the Nebbiolo often stays on its skins for well over a month, and the Barbarescos then age for two years or more in large oak casks. The single-vineyard bottlings from Rabajà, Asili and Paolin are the heart of the range. Expect firm, finely knit Nebbiolo with real tension and a clear sense of each site. These wines are rarely charming in their youth and usually need five to ten years in bottle to show what they can do.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and sage or shaved truffle; agnolotti del plin; porcini risotto; roast veal with its pan jus; duck breast with a cherry sauce; aged Castelmagno or Toma.

Tasting Profile

Expect classic, fragrant Barbaresco: red cherry, violets and dried herbs, with hints of spice and tar, while large Slavonian casks keep the oak in the background. Medium-bodied and elegant rather than brawny, it pairs firm but fine Nebbiolo tannins with bright, mineral acidity, finishing dry, savoury and long. Think of a lighter, more approachable Barolo.
