A sweet Mosel Riesling from Steffensberg, a vineyard already marked as Grand Cru on an 1897 map of the Mosel, made by one of the smallest serious estates in the region. Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler founded the estate in 2005. Two decades on they farm only about 4.5 hectares, much of it old, ungrafted Riesling (some vines are past 100) on slate slopes so steep that no machine can work them. Steffensberg sits in the village of Enkirch and is one of their three key sites. In the summer heat their dark slate keeps giving warmth back to the grapes well into the evening, and at night cold air coming down from the forests cools the vineyards off again. This is their Auslese, farmed organically (certified since 2016) and bottled in 375ml. That's a sensible size for a sweet wine, and a welcome one given how little they make. Considering where it comes from and how hard this farming is, it's remarkably fairly priced.

"Fermented in tonneau and aging in stainless steel, the 2025 Enkircher Steffensberg Auslese is clear and very concentrated on the rather bright nose that is reminiscent of matured yellow apples and quinces but also candied lemon fruits with salt. Picked from the second terrace along with the dry Steffensberg, this is a generous, refined and creamy-textured but saline, crystalline and savory Auslese with generous sweetness and tropical fruit aromas such as passion fruit, pineapple and banana on the finish. Tasted as a sample in April 2026." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Weiser-Kunstler

The wines made by married couple Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler are like nothing else coming out of the Mosel. They have beautiful, delineated, and almost crystalline structures, minerality to spare, and dazzling fruit purity.

These are cerebral, thought-provoking wines that benefit from cellaring. They’re racy and super-fresh, vibrating with Riesling tension. I probably wouldn’t offer a bottle of Weiser-Künstler to a Mosel newbie, someone looking for plush stone fruit and a hefty dose of sugar. These are wines for wine lovers, patient drinkers, and anyone interested in what old vines from one of the world’s most difficult terrains can yield.

Rare for the region, Weiser-Künstler is certified organic. They employ no mechanization in the vines, nor could they, if they wanted. The slopes are simply too steep and unforgiving. Konstantin and Alexandra may not have vines in the most famous vineyards, but they’ve worked tirelessly to highlight this unassuming yet truly great terroir. Ellergrub, Gaispfad and Steffensberg are home to old (80-100 years of age), ungrafted vines; the wines coming from these sites are truly special.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roquefort or Stilton with walnuts, seared foie gras with roasted apple, spicy Thai larb or green papaya salad, or a French apple tart or peach cobbler for dessert.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Mosel Auslese profile: ripe peach, apricot and citrus with a smoky, slate-driven minerality, plus the house's slightly phenolic edge (think peach pith and apple skin rather than pure fruit). Light-bodied and lusciously sweet, it is typically kept lively by the Mosel's racy acidity, finishing long, honeyed and fresh.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
