The 2025 Grand Cru dry wines won't be released until 2027, so this Kabinett Trocken from Trabener Gaispfad is one of only two dry Rieslings of note from Weiser-Künstler this vintage. It's also the only one from a single vineyard. Gaispfad is no lesser site. It was marked Grand Cru on the 1897 map of the Mosel, it's a steep slate slope that was never consolidated or re-parcelled, and the estate calls it a historic "Große Lage" (great site). Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler farm old, ungrafted vines organically on slopes too steep for any machine, and yields stay meager. 2025 is their 20th anniversary vintage, and it's a slightly more generous one. This Gaispfad comes out broader, even rounder than usual, though that's against a house style that is normally very extreme. If their wines have struck you as austere, this is the year to try again. They're masters of Kabinett, and this is a light, pure dry Kabinett at a remarkably fair price for some of the hardest farming in wine.

Robert Parker

"Tasted as a sample, the 2025 Trabener Gaispfad Kabinett Trocken is from old, low-yielding vines on a steep slope. It is intense and savory on the saline, slate-dominated and fruity-herbal nose. Round and fleshy on the palate, this is an intense Riesling, though still a little untamed, with generous fruit texture, fine acidity and a saline finish. It is quite voluptuous but always light and refined. To be bottled in mid-April with about 10.5% alcohol." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Weiser-Kunstler

The wines made by married couple Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler are like nothing else coming out of the Mosel. They have beautiful, delineated, and almost crystalline structures, minerality to spare, and dazzling fruit purity.

These are cerebral, thought-provoking wines that benefit from cellaring. They’re racy and super-fresh, vibrating with Riesling tension. I probably wouldn’t offer a bottle of Weiser-Künstler to a Mosel newbie, someone looking for plush stone fruit and a hefty dose of sugar. These are wines for wine lovers, patient drinkers, and anyone interested in what old vines from one of the world’s most difficult terrains can yield.

Rare for the region, Weiser-Künstler is certified organic. They employ no mechanization in the vines, nor could they, if they wanted. The slopes are simply too steep and unforgiving. Konstantin and Alexandra may not have vines in the most famous vineyards, but they’ve worked tirelessly to highlight this unassuming yet truly great terroir. Ellergrub, Gaispfad and Steffensberg are home to old (80-100 years of age), ungrafted vines; the wines coming from these sites are truly special.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pan-seared trout with brown butter and almonds; white asparagus with boiled potatoes and ham; Vietnamese summer rolls with herbs; hamachi crudo; goat cheese and chive tart.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic dry Mosel Kabinett profile: lime, green apple and white peach, with a stony, slate-driven minerality and a savoury, herbal hint of thyme. It is typically light-bodied and delicate, with racy acidity leading to a pure, dry, mouth-watering finish. Think of it as a lighter, more filigree take on dry Riesling than most.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
