Weiser-Kunstler, Riesling Sekt Brut Nature, 2023

This is Mosel Riesling with nowhere to hide. The Sekt is bottled Brut Nature, with no dosage, so there's no added sugar softening the grape's acidity or the slate it grows in. It comes from Weiser-Künstler, a micro-estate of about 4.5 hectares that the married couple Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler founded in 2005. They farm steep slate slopes with certified-organic vines, many of them old and ungrafted and some over 100 years old. Machines can't work slopes that steep. The house style is light on its feet and low in alcohol, which is just what you want behind a fully dry sparkler. 2023 was something of a dream year at the estate, and this is a serious bubbly for anyone who wants tension over cushion, with fair pricing given how hard this farming is.

More about Weiser-Kunstler

The wines made by married couple Konstantin Weiser and Alexandra Künstler are like nothing else coming out of the Mosel. They have beautiful, delineated, and almost crystalline structures, minerality to spare, and dazzling fruit purity.

These are cerebral, thought-provoking wines that benefit from cellaring. They’re racy and super-fresh, vibrating with Riesling tension. I probably wouldn’t offer a bottle of Weiser-Künstler to a Mosel newbie, someone looking for plush stone fruit and a hefty dose of sugar. These are wines for wine lovers, patient drinkers, and anyone interested in what old vines from one of the world’s most difficult terrains can yield.

Rare for the region, Weiser-Künstler is certified organic. They employ no mechanization in the vines, nor could they, if they wanted. The slopes are simply too steep and unforgiving. Konstantin and Alexandra may not have vines in the most famous vineyards, but they’ve worked tirelessly to highlight this unassuming yet truly great terroir. Ellergrub, Gaispfad and Steffensberg are home to old (80-100 years of age), ungrafted vines; the wines coming from these sites are truly special.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Raw oysters with mignonette; sashimi or nigiri; shrimp or vegetable tempura; smoked trout rillettes on rye crackers; warm Comté gougères.

Tasting Profile

Expect a bone-dry, zippy sparkler in the house's light, low-alcohol style: lemon zest, green apple and white peach, with salty, slate-driven minerality and a hint of dried herbs. With no dosage, Riesling's bright acidity runs the show over a lively mousse, finishing crisp and saline. Think a leaner, more citrusy alternative to Brut Nature Champagne, with less brioche.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
