Taillepieds means "foot-cutter," after the sharp-edged stones that cover this Volnay 1er Cru and wore out the vignerons' shoes in no time. The d'Angervilles rate it a touch more complete and powerful than their Champans or Caillerets. Their 1.07-hectare parcel sits at the very top of the village's south hill, with only a strip of village-level Volnay between it and the woods. The soil is poor, whitish and rocky, and the family credits the steep slope, the thin soil and the especially sunny exposure for the wine's finesse and elegance. The family also says the height makes Taillepieds more serious and reserved in its youth, and that it often needs longer in bottle before the bouquet opens up. Put that site in a warm, generous year like 2018 and you get a high, stony, reserved climat working with plenty of sun, which is exactly why it's worth tracking down. Guillaume d'Angerville has run the domaine since his father Jacques died in 2003, and the vineyards have been fully biodynamic since 2009. One for the history buffs: Taillepieds was once among the parcels that made up the Dukes of Burgundy's vineyard around Clos des Ducs.

"Perfumed, airy and more high-toned aromas derive more from the red side of the fruit spectrum while displaying pretty touch of spice and exotic tea. The cool and gorgeously textured medium-bodied flavors also brim with minerality on the focused, powerful and particularly firm finale that goes on and on. This is wonderful and I very much like the style and sheer class of this built-to-age Taillepieds." —Allen Meadows

"The 2018 Volnay Taillepieds 1er Cru comes from vines located high up on the hill at the same altitude as Clos des Ducs in a windy location. This has the most precocious bouquet among d’Angerville’s Volnays, with blueberry, cassis and iodine aromas billowing from the glass. The palate is built around a sweet core of slightly confit fruit. An unusually outgoing and approachable Les Taillepieds that is full of joie-de-vivre. Whether it has the intellectual element of, say, the Clos des Ducs or the Champans is another matter. It comes across as a Volnay more intent on sensory enjoyment." —Neal Martin

"More muscular than the more ethereal Caillerets that preceded it, the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds reveals a deep-pitched bouquet of cherries, wild blueberries, dark chocolate and orange rind, with only subtle hints of the savory nuances to come. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated and introverted, with powdery tannins, tangy acids and a tight-knit, reserved profile despite its evident sucrosity of fruit." —William Kelley

More about Marquis d'Angerville

Volnay's archetypal name-producer for over a century, Marquis d'Angerville remains one of Burgundy's most consistent voices. These Pinot Noirs sit in the sweet spot between aromatic seduction and structural power—wines that open gracefully and age beautifully. The domaine's vineyard holdings represent some of Volnay's finest sites. Classic stuff, made the traditional way by people who know the terroir intimately—and it still works.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast squab or pigeon with jus, venison loin with a sour-cherry sauce, rack of lamb with rosemary and garlic, or a wild mushroom and beef pie.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Volnay profile in a firmer, more structured register: red cherry, raspberry and violet over a stony, mineral core, with fine, tight tannins and bright acidity. It is typically reserved when young and built to age, opening with time toward savoury, earthy notes and a long, elegant finish.
