Natural-wine Cote-Rotie from the southern tip of the appellation, where the last vines run right up against Condrieu. Jean-Michel Stephan and son Romain farm Coteaux de Bassenon organically by horse, then co-ferment a field blend of old-vine Syrah, Serine and Viognier with carbonic maceration and zero added sulfur. The dark migmatite and biotite soils and the splash of Viognier give a wine that is perfumed and silky rather than brooding, twenty-four months in old Troncais oak adding depth without obscuring the fruit. Neither fined nor filtered, it is a transparent, energetic take on one of France's great Syrah hillsides. Decant a young bottle and it sings.

More about Maison Stephan

Jean-Michel Stephan brought the natural-wine ideas of Beaujolais to Côte-Rôtie early on, and for decades he has made some of the most transparent, silky Syrah in the Northern Rhône without adding sulfur.

Stephan trained at agricultural college in Beaujolais and worked for Jean-Paul Brun at Domaine des Terres Dorées before setting up on his own in 1991 in Tupin-et-Semons, at the southern end of Côte-Rôtie near Condrieu. He sold his early crops to a négociant and bottled his first wine under his own name in 1994. A meeting with Marcel Lapierre, the Beaujolais pioneer of Jules Chauvet's low-sulfur methods, set his course; by 1997 he had stopped adding sulfites altogether. In 2017 his son Romain joined him, and together they founded Maison Stephan, adding vineyards beyond the appellation for a Vin de France Syrah.

The Stephans work about four hectares of steep, terraced granite, largely planted to Serine, the old local strain of Syrah, with a little Viognier, and some vines more than a century old. The farming is organic, the vineyards are worked by hand, and the wines are made with whole bunches and carbonic techniques in some cuvées, no sulfur, no fining and no filtration. Expect lifted, perfumed Syrah with pepper, flowers and gentle tannins, delicate yet deep.
