"The 2023 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru, raised in 30% new oak with almost 100% whole cluster, has a rather herbaceous nose that might put off those seeking more fruit-driven Pinots. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite herbaceous again, typical de Montille style in a way. Maybe it needs a little more fruit on the finish to balance it all out." —Neal Martin

Vineyard

The name of Volnay 1er Cru "Mitans" was derived from the word "milieu", which is middle in french as this vineyard is located mid-slope. Like Champans, there is a great diversity of soils and subsoils from one end of this cru to the other. 45-year-old vine average. According to many, Hubert de Montille put Mitans on the map, so to speak.

Soil

Chalky scree and sandy soils at the top of the parcel, limestone bedrock closer to the surface in the middle of the parcel, and deeper clay soils in the lower section.

Viticulture

Vinification

100% whole cluster fermentation. Regarding sulfur, reds have the following: 45-65 mg/l total SO2, 20-25 mg/l free SO2.

Aging

Aged 14-18 months in barrel (30% new), then assembled to age additional months in stainless steel.
