A village Vosne-Romanée from one of Domaine d'Eugénie's very first vintages, and now with more than a decade in bottle, it's a rare chance to taste where this estate began. The domaine was born in July 2006, when the Pinault family bought the René Engel estate, and Frédéric Engerer says it has farmed organically and biodynamically from the start. The 2008 was made before the domaine moved into its own vat room and cellar on Rue de la Goillote in the centre of Vosne, across from the Clos d'Eugénie, in 2009. Today the domaine builds its village Vosne from a 0.35-hectare plot called Les Vigneux, at the foot of the slope next to Grand Cru Romanée-Saint-Vivant, plus young-vine fruit from its Premier and Grand Cru parcels. That's serious company for a village wine. Young village Vosne is a promise, and this mature bottle lets you see what the promise turns into.

Burghound

89 points

"A very fresh, ripe and relatively elegant nose of red and blue pinot fruit that is nuanced with black cherry and spice hints that are also reflected by the dense, sappy and delicious middle weight flavors that are supported by unusually sophisticated tannins for this level, all wrapped in a linear and precise finish. A lovely villages." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

89 points

"Medium red. High-pitched aromas of black cherry, redcurrant and spicy oak. Supple and sweet but with very good tension to the cherry fruit. Strong acidity and a firm tannic spine give this wine a sharply chiseled character. Finishes saline, dry and long. Not an easy premier cru: I'd give it at least a couple years in the bottle. This cuvee included the Clos d'Eugenie parcel that will be bottled on its own starting with the 2009 vintage." —Stephen Tanzer

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherry jus; coq au vin; wild mushroom risotto or mushrooms on toast; roast quail or guinea fowl; a wedge of Époisses or Comté at the end.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Vosne-Romanée profile: red and black cherry, raspberry and a touch of exotic spice, with the silky, perfumed elegance the village is known for. Typically medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. With age, the fruit tends to give way to savoury, earthy, forest-floor notes, leading into a long, dry finish.
