Clos de la Roche is the largest Grand Cru in Morey-Saint-Denis—seventeen hectares of east-facing vineyard on limestone and marl soils barely thirty centimeters deep, studded with large boulders that give the cru its name. It is Morey's most structured and powerful Grand Cru, sometimes compared to Chambertin for its depth and seriousness. Louis Jadot, founded in 1859 and now under the Kopf family's ownership with winemaker Frédéric Barnier at the helm since 2012, brings decades of Grand Cru expertise to bear. The 2005 Burgundy vintage is one for the ages: a "vintner's dream" of exceptional ripeness balanced by fresh acidity, with thick-skinned Pinot Noir that yielded intense color and beautifully fine-grained tannins. This Clos de la Roche shows black cherry, truffle, and graphite depth with opulent fruit and remarkable structure. Now in its prime drinking window with the potential for continued development over another decade or more.

Professional Reviews

Burghound

BH 94
"There is quite a bit of torrefaction on the expressive nose that includes notes of dark berry fruit, mocha and café on the wood spice infused nose that merges into rich, dense, powerful and palate drenching flavors that are impressively concentrated and despite the ripeness, retain a fine sense of precision and length."

Antonio Galloni

"Good medium ruby. Very ripe aromas of medicinal dark cherry, tar, mocha and dried herbs; very Clos de la Roche! Sweet and concentrated but a bit youthfully inexpressive today, with the medicinal cherry character dominating the palate. With moderate mid-palate flesh, the tannins currently show a somewhat gritty quality." -Stephen Tanzer

"Jadot’s 2005 Clos de la Roche offers scents of red raspberry, cherry, resin and maple syrup. Bright and sappy, sweetly-fruited and spicy on the palate, it finishes with smoky, resinous and faintly-bitter medicinal notes mingling with persistently sweet, ripe fruit. While quite accessible today, this carries a considerable load of tannin beneath its folds of fruit, should have at least ten year potential, and may well enter a tough period after bottling." -David Schildknecht

Wine Enthusiast

"This is a powerhouse of a wine. It is driven forward by immense tannins as well as by superrich fruit that still keeps itself in check by a velvet texture. There is spice, acidity, some toast and vanilla, and finally a sunburst of warmth."
