This is a 1990 Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru, and red Burgundy with more than three decades in bottle doesn't come along often. It's a chance to taste what Pinot Noir from a serious Côte de Nuits hillside turns into with real age, without paying the prices the famous names now ask. The Machard de Gramont family farms its Les Damodes vines on marl and limestone full of rocks and pebbles, at up to 340 meters. The domaine was founded in 1983, so this bottle comes from its early years. Today Arnaud Machard de Gramont runs it with his sons Alban and Alexis from 19th-century vaulted cellars just south of town near Premeaux-Prissey. The family's ongoing project says a lot about them: replanting old hillside vineyards that were abandoned after war or phylloxera. Treat it the way you'd treat any mature bottle. Stand it upright for a day or two and pour carefully.

Robert Parker

"I am happy to report that his American importer requested that Gramont bottle his 1990s unfiltered for the American market, to which Gramont enthusiastically agreed. He is delighted that so many Americans have begun to understand that sediment is a sign of a natural, unprocessed wine, but he wishes his European clients, particularly the English, would recognize just how much quality is taken out during filtration. Ironically, Gramont's English agent, Tim Marshall, also a grape grower in Burgundy, continues to encourage his growers to filter. The ludicrousness of this becomes even more glaring when Marshall refuses to filter wines from his own vineyard that are reserved for his personal consumption. (Those that are sold are filtered.) Why? Because, he says, too much flavor and aroma are removed." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast quail or pheasant, wild mushroom risotto, duck breast with cherry jus, coq au vin, aged Comté

Tasting Profile

Nuits-Saint-Georges is the firmer, earthier side of the Côte de Nuits, and with long bottle age Pinot Noir from here typically moves from fresh red cherry toward dried cherry, forest floor, leather and mushroom. Expect a medium body, softened, silky tannins and still-lively acidity, with a savoury, gently earthy finish.
