Neighbor to Yquem and often considered its closest rival, Suduiraut produces some of Sauternes' most opulent and exotic wines. The estate's 91 hectares on clay-gravel soils create a style that balances power with freshness. The 2001 vintage was exceptional for Sauternes—perfect conditions for botrytis development produced wines of extraordinary concentration and complexity. Now with over two decades of age, this bottle has developed the honeyed, marmalade, and spice notes that define mature Sauternes while retaining the acidity that keeps great dessert wines vibrant. Perfect with foie gras, blue cheese, or fruit desserts. Serve slightly chilled.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2001 Suduiraut has a very well-defined bouquet of marmalade, honeysuckle, touches of kerosene and pine, all focused and vigorous. The palate is balanced with a fine bead of acidity, fresh and vibrant, featuring Seville orange marmalade mixed with orange peel, peach and wild honey; it displays a little more delineation than I have noticed compared to previous bottles, and great cohesion and persistence on the finish. Excellent." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

93 points

"With 150 grams per liter of residual sugar, the 2001 Suduiraut is showing elegantly today with a delicate, mature bouquet of apricots, spices, candied orange, saffron and pineapple. Medium to full-bodied, it has an elegant and round palate and a somewhat metallic character, and it’s long and fresh with delicate notes of quince in the finish. This blend of 90% Sémillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc was matured for 24 months in oak barrels (40% new, 30% one year and 30% older)." —Yohan Castaing

Jancis Robinson

"Beautiful amber colour and great gravitas as well as sweetness. Already very enjoyable but obviously with a long way to go. Complex already. Barley sugar at its best." —Jancis Robinson MW

Decanter

95 points

"This has rich caramelised nectarine and apricot fruits, a sense of uplift and steel through the core. It is sweet in its texture but not in its expression, and there is such a lift through the finish that you feel confident it has a long life ahead. On the more savoury spectrum of fruit, white pear dipped in saffron and cardamom. Yet again when you come back after 20 minutes it is the dried apricots that take the lead. Good quality, concentrated and pointed. 150g/l residual sugar. 40% new oak." —Jane Anson

Wine Spectator

98 points

"Gorgeous aromas of honey, passion fruit, mango and candied lemon rind. Full-bodied and ultraconcentrated, yet balanced and refined. It lasts for minutes on the palate. This has just about everything in the right place. Stunning. Best after 2009."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Foie gras, blue cheese — Roquefort or Fourme d'Ambert — or a fruit dessert such as poached pear or peach tart. Also good with a mild curry if you want to be adventurous.

Tasting Profile

Opulent, sweet Sauternes now over twenty years old: orange marmalade, honey, dried apricot, ginger and a nutty, caramelised edge. Full-bodied and viscous, with vibrant acidity underneath that keeps everything lifted and the long finish fresh. Mature and open for business now. Serve slightly chilled.
