Barolo Monfortino Riserva is more than a wine—it’s a benchmark, a reference point, and a piece of Piedmontese history. Crafted by Giacomo Conterno and aged for up to seven years in large Slavonian oak, Monfortino is made with extended maceration, wild fermentations, and a deep belief in the expressive power of Nebbiolo when given time and respect.

The 2006 vintage was warm but classically structured, giving this Monfortino power and depth without excess weight. Now approaching 20 years of age, it’s still youthful in its core, offering layers of dark cherry, black tea, iron, leather, dried rose, tar, and that cool, ferrous minerality that only Serralunga can deliver. The tannins are broad and firm, the acidity bright and focused, and the finish echoes for minutes.

This is a wine that demands cellaring and rewards patience. It's drinking well with a long decant now—but will sing even louder over the next 10–30 years. A true vino da meditazione, and a pinnacle of traditional Barolo.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 98
"Good full red. Explosive nose offers plum, cherry liqueur, licorice, roasted tobacco and black olive, along with a sexy gamey nuance. Boasts an uncanny combination of silky texture and sheer intensity, with the fully ripe red fruit flavors complicated by mint, truffle and dried flowers--in other words, classic Barolo. Features with a firm spine of acidity and big, ripe tannins that are totally buffered by the wine's mid-palate material. The incredible, slowly building finish leaves the mouth reverberating with perfume. Wonderfully harmonious from the start but constructed for a 30+-year life in bottle." -Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

"Tasted from botte number 45, the 2006 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is gorgeous. Roberto tells me, 'Monfortino is not a drinking wine, it’s a chewing wine.' His comment makes perfect sense and offers incredible insight into the profound beauty beholden before us. You almost feel the crunch of the young tannin and the snap of its presence in the mouth. The bouquet is perfectly matched to the wine. Elegance and finesse add contrast to the wine’s sheer power and determination. Dried rose, licorice, tar, spice and tobacco show immense definition and focus. The 2006 vintage is noted for its extraordinary aging potential."

"Deep, complex aromas of cherry, tar, leather and licorice signal this powerful yet fresh red. Shows great intensity to the sweet cherry fruit, accented by mineral and eucalyptus hints. Vibrant, with the firm structure driving the very long aftertaste. The gripping tannins will need time to soften.—Tasted non-blind at the winery (November 2013)."
