Those who know this wine (and its unusual barrel-shaped bottle) love it. On paper, it sounds bizarre: a semi-sparkling, semi-dry orange wine made from two obscure grapes (97% Debina and 3% Vlahiko). But it’s truly delicious, and a totally unique experience. Earthy, with flavors of hazelnut, apricot, citrus oil and spices like cinnamon and ginger.

More about Glinavos

Domaine Glinavos sits in Zitsa, in the mountainous Ioannina region of Epirus in northwestern Greece. Lefteris Glinavos founded the estate in 1978, and his son Thomas joined in 1990. Alongside the local white Debina, they champion Vlahiko, a rare native red, grown on limestone soils at around 700 meters. Their Vlahiko, with a splash of Bekari, spends 18 months in older French oak. It tastes wild and bright, with the lacy minerality of a mountain terroir.
