In 2025 Julian Haart chose not to bottle a single-vineyard Frauenberg, so every bit of his Frauenberg fruit went into this Rote Erden instead. Most years, Frauenberg is one of two Rheinhessen Grand Crus that Haart sells only in rare Grand Cru cases, and Rote Erden gets the fruit that doesn't make the cut. The name means "red earth" and refers to the cuvée, not to a vineyard. This year the wine also includes some fruit from Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott, a lesser-known site in a cool valley just southwest of Klaus Peter Keller's home base in Flörsheim-Dalsheim. Keller explains why a Piesport grower has Rheinhessen fruit at all. Haart trained with him, and Keller had always wanted to make wine from a steep Mosel site, while Haart wanted to try a great limestone terroir. In 2018 they traded: the Kellers now harvest and make the wine from Haart's tiny terraced Schubertslay parcel in the middle of the Goldtröpfchen. In return they found him parcels in Frauenberg, a site of marl and limestone with red clay, and in Zellerweg, which they farm and he harvests and vinifies himself. His importer calls it "a Rheinhessen wine made in the Mosel," and in 2025 it's the closest most of us will get to Haart's Frauenberg without tracking down one of those Grand Cru cases.

More about Julian Haart

Julian Haart learned from the titans, including Egon Müller and Klaus Peter Keller, before launching his own micro-estate in Piesport in 2011. His Goldtröpfchen Kabinett is an elegant love letter to the region: off-dry Riesling from steep slate that balances sweetness and acidity like a tightrope walker. Small production, massive flavor.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Wiener schnitzel with lemon, roast pork loin with apples, seared scallops in brown butter, or lobster.

Tasting Profile

Expect a dry Riesling shaped by limestone, marl and red clay: citrus, white peach and green apple, with a chalky, stony edge. Typically medium-bodied and a little broader than a slate-grown Mosel Riesling, with firm, bright acidity carrying through to a clean, dry, mineral finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
