BH♥Sweet spot Outstanding
"Warm earth, poached plum, violet and softly sauvage nuances. Good power and punch, average density, muscular, lightly stony medium weight flavors. Excellent length, youthfully austere finale. Excellent development potential here.

There is no address in Burgundy for which we have more affection than Domaine de Montille.

Anyone with a pumping heart was instantly charmed by the authenticity and humility of the late, great patriarch, Hubert de Montille. Unequivocal and confident in his ability to reveal greatness through transparency, it's difficult to distinguish whether we are talking about de Montille or the terroir of Volnay, and that is the mark of compelling Burgundy.

Hubert de Montille passed the reins at his famous domaine to his son Etienne about 20 years ago. He died about five years ago. Yet he is such a giant of a figure in Burgundy that it is still impossible to think about de Montille without thinking about Hubert. It helps that Hubert’s name remains on the label!

Hubert may be best known internationally for making hard-assed wines. He didn’t care what Robert Parker or anyone else said. He followed his own vision of Burgundy tradition, which included a fair bit of tannic extraction. His passion and determination earned him a starring role in Mondovino, the anti-globalization wine film by Jonathan Nossiter.

But Etienne changed things. He wanted more purity, less extraction. He was brought up with the likes of Christophe Roumier and other members of his generation, who wanted to emphasize fruit and terroir rather than structure. Almost right away, the style at de Montille changed.

People liked the wines, of course — they can show very well on release. But would they hold up the way his father’s legendary wines do? A recently consumed, and very beautiful, 2002 Pommard seemed to confirm the they age just fine! Will they go 40-50 years like his dad’s wines? Who knows, and who cares, other than your yet-to-be-born grandkids.

"This is aromatically more complex but also more reserved with its nose of warm earth poached plum violet and softly sauvage nuances. There is good power and punch if only average density to the muscular and lightly stony medium weight flavors that display excellent length on the more youthfully austere finale. Excellent development potential here."

"The 2022 Beaune Greves 1er Cru has more delineation and focus than the Les Sizies, with vivid red berry fruit mixed with light loamy scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. This cuvee is quite candied in style with blood orange towards the grainy-textured finish. Fine, it s just a little abrupt at the moment." -Neal Martin

What importer Polaner Selections has to say about this wine...

Vineyard
The Beaune 1er Cru of "Greves" refers to the gravelly terrasses of this hillside. De Montille's 1.26 hectares are located just below Bouchard's "Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus", arguably the most famous sector of Greves. De Montille deems this a "Grand Premier Crus", and as a result, lists the vineyard above the appellation/village on the label.
Orientation
Optimal east-facing exposure
Soil
A light, clay-limestone soil with brittle rocks and iron flecks.
Viticulture
practicing biodynamic
Vinification
50% whole cluster fermentation, 50% destemmed. Regarding sulfur, reds have the following: 45-65 mg/l total SO2, 20-25 mg/l free SO2.
Aging
Aged 14-18 months in barrel (25-30% new), then assembled to age additional months in stainless steel.

Burgundy has long been the world's most famous wine region. But, underneath all the prestige, this region can be hard to get to know.

While Burgundy offers many great trophies from top producers in well-known villages like Vosne Romanee and Puligny Montrachet, it also offers excellent values to anyone willing to explore beyond the famous names. Our collection– one of the largest in the U.S. – has plenty of both!

From the very basics of Burgundy's regions and wines to the specific terroirs of individual single vineyards--
