This is village Vosne-Romanée with grand cru neighbours. 2011 is the year the domaine started bottling its walled Clos d'Eugénie, just below La Tâche, on its own, so this is the 'straight' village Vosne rather than the Clos. It's a village-level entry point to an estate whose 7.9 hectares span 11 appellations, including five grands crus. The domaine itself has a good backstory: in July 2006 the Pinault family bought the old René Engel estate and renamed it. The estate has farmed organically and biodynamically from the start. As is usual at the house, fermentation happens in temperature-controlled oak vats, with some whole clusters in the mix. A 2011 from this address is a good chance to see what a Vosne village bottling does with some years behind it.

"Outstanding! A spicy, ripe, fresh and elegant nose of black cherry and cassis leads to energetic, detailed and velvety middle weight flavors that possess a lovely inner mouth perfume before culminating in a balanced and lingering finish. This is not only very Vosne but very promising as well." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

"Musky aromas of black raspberry, smoky minerality and spices. Smooth, ripe and sweet, with modest depth and good early appeal to the berry and spice flavors. This medium-bodied village wine finishes with dusty, even tannins." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

"The 2011 Vosne-Romanee Village has a pretty bouquet, perhaps a little rustic for Domaine d’Eugenie, but very attractive all the same, bouncing along with red cherries, crushed strawberry and bergamot. The palate is slightly leafy and autumnal on the entry with fine tannins and a light, unimposing finish that suggest this is best consumed in the next six years." —Neal Martin

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with a cherry or red-wine jus; coq au vin; roast quail or squab with wild mushrooms; mushroom and thyme risotto; a mature Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Vosne-Romanée profile: red cherry and raspberry with darker plum, a touch of spice and violet, and the savoury lift that whole-cluster fermentation tends to bring. Typically medium-bodied and silky, with fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins, finishing long and perfumed. With bottle age, Vosne often moves toward forest floor and earthy notes.
