What is this wine?
Founded in 1928, Domaine Huet is the benchmark estate of Vouvray and one of France’s most respected biodynamic producers. Le Mont is a prized single vineyard with green-tinged, silex-rich soils that yield wines of great precision and minerality. The designation Moelleux 1er Trie indicates a sweet style made from botrytized and late-harvested Chenin Blanc berries, selected in multiple passes through the vineyard. The 2020 vintage, warm yet balanced, delivered superbly concentrated, ageworthy wines.

Why get this wine?
Huet’s Le Mont Moelleux 1er Trie represents the pinnacle of sweet Chenin Blanc—rare, long-lived, and profoundly complex. It is one of the Loire’s greatest dessert wines, rivaling top Sauternes in richness while retaining the finesse and acidity unique to Vouvray. Highly collectible and cellar-worthy, it is a must for lovers of world-class sweet wines.

What does this wine taste like?
Lusciously sweet yet vibrant, with flavors of honey, quince, apricot, and candied citrus layered over flinty minerality. Creamy texture balanced by electric acidity gives it both richness and lift, leading to a long, resonant finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Magnificent young with blue cheese, foie gras, or fruit tarts. Best cellared for 10–40 years to unlock its full aromatic and textural complexity.

"Boasting 91g/L residual sugar, Le Mont's 2020 Première Trie offers additional sweetness as well as lower acidity compared with the Haut-Lieu Première Trie. As a result, this cuvée inevitably has a sense of additional richness and weight on the palate. It's balanced, but the richness means it has had to trade in some of its energy and finesse. Offering orange peel, apricot jam, floral essences and apple sauce, it's satisfying and nourishing, but I'd like more direction and purpose on the finish. That said, this is still a well-crafted and carefully made wine." —Rebecca Gibb MW

Robert Parker

"The intensely yellow colored 2020 Vouvray Le Mont Moelleux Première Trie is highly concentrated and complex on the nose that exhibits candied lemon zest and chutney aromas along with calcareous and walnut notes. Sweet (really sweet!) yet refined and elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and generous yet piquant and firmly structured, greatly tensioned and salty 1ère Trie with pineapple flavors on the finely tannic and energetic, very sustainable finish. The 2020 has great aging potential, and I would never serve it too young. When will it really start to show its best? I don't know, but you can’t go wrong to check the wine again after 10 years. Tasted as a final sample shortly before bottling in May 2021." —Stephan Reinhardt

"Enriched with 71g/L of residual sugar, the profile is quite fruity in a classic, less exotic style, offering scents of apricot, white peach and orange. Aeration adds more complex layers, notably a subtle florality (camomile, jasmine and verbena). The palate is concentrated but balanced and an impression of verticality is provided by the wine’s underlying backbone and its mineral and mint-infused freshness. A textbook wine from Huet."

"Showy but still elegant and refined, this beautiful wine binds together yellow fig compote, glazed white peach and crystalized ginger notes with details of green tea, blanched almond, verbena and honeysuckle. Harmonious, with tremendous length, kept lively by vivid acidity. Drink now through 2040."

Tasting Profile

Just east of Tours, on the right bank of the Loire, lies the plateau of Vouvray. Here Chenin Blanc is carefully cultivated in fields of ancient stone and crafted into some of the finest white wines on the planet. And no name resounds in Vouvray like Domaine Huet.

In Huet's hands,Vouvray’s harmonious mysteries reach peak expression. From their dry and dazzling bottlings to the sensual and sweet, Huet knows how to allow the grape to express the terroir.

The Domaine was an early adopter of biodynamics, and these vines -- divided into the three vineyards Haut Lieu, Le Mont and Clos de Bourg -- have been exceptionally well farmed for decades. They make the wine in ancient cellars dug out of the local limestone, "touffeau." When you visit, you can see roots from Le Mont's vines breaking through the chalky white ceilings.

Domaine Huet has a wondrous nickname for Chenin Blanc: Plan du Clair de Lune, translating to “the Vine of the Moonlight”. This captures the subtle essence of Huet’s wines: clarity amidst the darkness; beams of brilliance traversing the heart of a terroir; purity of land and mind. We invite you to experience this beauty for yourself.
