Gewurztraminer scares people off with its reputation for sweetness, but this one flips the script: it's essentially dry. Schoffit grows it in the Harth, a gravelly plain near Colmar where old massale-selection vines, some three-quarters of a century old, ripen fully in the sun. The estate is certified organic and moving toward biodynamics, and the wine is fermented with native yeasts and raised in stainless steel to keep it fresh and unadorned. You still get all the exotic aromatics Gewurztraminer is famous for, but the palate is structured and clean, with just a whisper of sugar that reads as ripeness rather than sweetness. Proof that this grape can be serious and food-friendly, not just a dessert-course novelty.

"The 2023 Gewurztraminer Lieu-Dit Harth Cuvée Caroline is from an old massal selection. It has just a slight note of honeysuckle spice on the nose. The palate plunges into beautiful, juicy, smooth white peach flesh with a touch of nectarine and svelte body. Mandarin peel and lemon freshness define the palate, swallowing the 8 g/L of residual sweetness with much verve. Schoffit says it might be the driest Gewurztraminer they ever made." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

More about Domaine Schoffit

In Colmar, Schoffit makes Alsace Riesling and other whites the way they demand to be made—dry, mineral, age-worthy. These aren't soft and fruity comfort wines; they're structured, complex, built on granite soils and limestone that push acidity and complexity. Weygandt-Metzler brings them to America, recognizing their singular expression of Alsace terroir. Alsace's best-kept secret, assuming you want Riesling that challenges instead of comforts.
