In a commune known for big, flashy, oaky reds, Pierre Duroché makes Gevrey-Chambertin for elegance and finesse, and his village bottling is where you see it best. You don't need to stretch for his Premier or Grand Crus to understand what sets him apart. Pierre is the fifth generation to work the family vines, and all of the domaine's 8.25 hectares lie within Gevrey-Chambertin. His grandfather Philippe and Philippe's wife Odile, herself a vigneron's daughter, built the estate up to five hectares by swapping and buying parcels. The family still does careful massal selection and rigorous pruning, and their vines live to a great age. Old vines like these naturally give small, uneven "millerandé" berries, which are healthier and more concentrated. The grapes are harvested by hand and oak is kept to a minimum, so the fruit can speak plainly. Pierre is also a climber, and that same fastidiousness shows up in the cellar. The result is classic Gevrey without the flash and a lot of Burgundy for a village-level bottle.

Burghound

90 points

"Reduction and wood make for a pungent introduction to the bigger and richer medium-bodied flavors that are not particularly complex but they are refreshing and persistent. If more depth develops with a few years of bottle age this should merit the upper end of my projected range." —Allen Meadows

Antonio Galloni

88 points

"The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is quite unassuming on the nose, at first, before gently unfolding with undergrowth-tinged red fruit and subtle pressed flower scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine line of acidity, a little fleshy towards the finish with lightly spiced red fruit. Moderate length. Drink over the next 5 to 7 years." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

89 points

"Pretty aromas of raspberries, dried flowers and candied peel introduce the 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Village, is a medium-bodied, succulent wine with a juicy core of fruit, light structuring tannins and a saline finish." —William Kelley

More about Duroche

Gilles Duroché and his son Pierre run eight hectares of Gevrey-Chambertin, spanning village, premier cru, and grand cru levels across the appellation's finest sites. Hand-harvested, minimal oak—wines made to let the grapes reveal their purest form. Pierre is the fifth generation to work the vines here, taking over from his father in 2007. Fourth and fifth generation Burgundy, made with the kind of attention to detail that separates the serious from the pretenders.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with thyme, duck breast with cherry sauce, wild mushroom risotto, boeuf bourguignon, coq au vin, Époisses or Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect red and dark cherry with hints of blue fruit, a savoury, earthy edge and perhaps a faint struck-match note when first opened. Typically medium-bodied, with fine tannins and fresh acidity, it's Gevrey's structure delivered with more finesse than muscle. The oak stays in the background, and the finish is long and lightly spiced.
