The Cogno Barolo to know if you don't know Cogno yet. Cascina Nuova is the entry to the family's lineup, drawn from the younger vines of their flagship MGA Ravera in Novello — and "entry" here just means earlier-drinking, not lesser. Valter Fissore (son-in-law of the late Elvio Cogno) farms Ravera as carefully as any cru in the Langhe; Cogno is the single largest grower in the MGA. The 2020 — a warm, balanced vintage that has produced exceptionally charming Baroli — was aged 24 months in large Slavonian botti, in the traditional Cogno style. The wine is pure Nebbiolo: violets, sour cherry, rose petal, fine tannin, savory length. Drinkable now with air, built to reward another five-plus years in the cellar.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2020 Barolo Cascina Nuova is lacking in color and freshness. Sweet dried cherry, mint, white pepper, spice and crushed rocks are all nicely delineated, though. The 2020 is initially promising, but it’s hard to get past the angular, searing contours. This tastes like wine from another producer, not like Cogno." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"The Elvio Cogno 2020 Barolo Cascina Nuova has a hint of smoke and barrel with lots of red fruits, currants and cherries. There is an earthy element that ties in nicely with the oak, and there is a tart or crunchy side to the fruit that concludes with grippy tannins. It ages in large oak casks for 24 months. This is an ample release of 20,000 bottles." —Monica Larner

Wine Spectator

95 points

"This is supple and complex, delivering cherry, strawberry, summer meadow, earth, leather and iron aromas and flavors. Firmly structured, this picks up a hint of licorice as it winds down on the lingering finish, with tannins that are solid yet civilized. Shows fine potential. Best from 2028 through 2046."

Wine Enthusiast

"This wine offers a symphony of spiced, mixed fruits that play across the sensory spectrum, from the bright, high-toned notes to the deeper bass tones. Crushed flowers and savory herbs add subtle accents that keep you drawn to the glass. The palate's elegance is perceived immediately as fine tannins and vibrant acidity deftly move the red-hued fruits across the palate to join with the more savory and umami tinged notes of the finish."

More about Elvio Cogno

We have been excited about Cogno's wines for many years. With the most recent of vintages, Elvio Cogno has reached the pinnacle of greatness. The domaine can now join a small handful of producers in Barolo that we can truly call elite.

This was inevitable. Cogno was founded by Elvio Cogno in 1990 after he left Marcarini, where he earned a reputation as one of the greatest wine-makers in Piedmont. Since then, he (together with his daughter Nadia and her husband, Valter Fissore) has been making very traditional-style Barolos in the village of Novello, and especially its top Cru, Ravera.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, tajarin with butter and sage, mushroom risotto, roast duck or guinea fowl, braised short ribs, or aged Castelmagno and Toma. Anything that wants Nebbiolo's savory grip and perfume.

Tasting Profile

Pale garnet. Aromas of violet, dried rose, sour cherry, tar and woodsmoke. Medium-bodied, the tannins fine-grained and chalky, acidity bright, with a savory, lingering finish typical of Ravera.
