Most people think of Burgundy when they think of great Pinot Noir. Fewer think of a windswept limestone hillside 20 minutes south of Vienna, but they should. This is old-vine Pinot from Gumpoldskirchen, the storied village at the heart of Austria's Thermenregion, farmed organically by the Reinisch family on fossil-rich limestone that gives the wine its cool, chiseled backbone. The Reinisches have quietly become the reference point for red wine in this corner of Austria, and the Alte Reben ('old vines') is where they show what elevation and age can do. Serious Pinot at a fraction of what the name commands elsewhere.
