A scratched label is good news if you're buying to drink: this is a 1989 classified Pauillac, and a scuffed label bothers collectors far more than the person pulling the cork. Grand-Puy Ducasse is a Fifth Growth with a quirk. Its winery was built in 1820 on the Pauillac docks, looking out over the Gironde estuary, and for two centuries the wines were made there, in town rather than among the vines. The estate's vineyard is split into three large plots across the commune. The northern plot neighbours Mouton, Lafite and Pontet-Canet, and the vines grow on the gravels Pauillac is known for, with the stony silica-gravel going to Cabernet Sauvignon. When this wine was made, the estate belonged to the négociant house Mestrezat-Preller. It bought Grand-Puy Ducasse in 1971, after the death of the last member of the family that had owned it for three centuries. For anyone curious about decades-old classified Pauillac without paying for a famous name, this is an honest, unfussy way in.

"The 1989 is forward, with a cedary, ripe, moderately intense bouquet. Not a blockbuster, but spicy and delicious, with abundant quantities of chocolate and cassis-flavored fruit, this may be the finest wine from this property in decades." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse

Grand-Puy Ducasse is the odd one out among Pauillac's classified estates: its château doesn't sit among its vines but on the quay in the town of Pauillac, looking out over the Gironde, where the wine has been made for some two hundred years.

The story starts in 1675, when Arnaud Ducasse bought a modest house on the riverbank, and the family held the estate for generations. Pierre Ducasse, a lawyer, assembled vineyard land across the commune, and his son built the riverside winery in 1820. Today the owner is CA Grands Crus, the wine arm of the Crédit Agricole bank, which launched a long improvement plan in 2004 that has brought a new vat room and new cellars.

The 40 hectares are a patchwork: gravel hillsides in the north for Cabernet Sauvignon, the historic plots of the Grand-Puy lieu-dit at the center, and sandier ground to the west better suited to Merlot. The vineyard is planted to roughly 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, and has been plowed rather than weeded with herbicides since 1996. The wine spends about 18 months in French oak, around 40% new.

Expect Pauillac at its more elegant end: cassis, cedar and graphite with firm tannins that settle nicely with age.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic, entrecôte bordelaise, beef Wellington, or a wedge of aged Comté or Mimolette.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Pauillac profile from gravel-grown Cabernet Sauvignon: blackcurrant and cassis, with the cedar, graphite and tobacco notes the commune is known for. With bottle age, the style typically turns savoury and leathery, with a medium-to-full body, fine, softened tannins and fresh acidity, finishing dry and long.
