Angelo Gaja is Italy's most celebrated winemaker, and Costa Russi is his single-vineyard statement from Barbaresco. The 2001 sits comfortably in its drinking window: darker and richer than many Gaja Barbarescos, with notes of coffee, vanilla, and toast alongside bright cherry-raspberry fruit.
