Egon Müller's Scharzhofberger Kabinett is about as close as German Riesling gets to a reference point, and the 2021 is a chance to get one young. The Scharzhofberg is one of Germany's most famous vineyards and was probably first planted by the Romans. It's a steep, south-facing slope at Wiltingen, tucked into a side valley off the Saar, on deep grey Devonian slate with no bedrock underneath. It's also one of only two sites (the other is the Wiltinger braune Kupp) whose name the estate puts on a Prädikat label. Müller has never let the legal must-weight rules decide what gets called Kabinett. Ripe grapes from those two sites become Kabinett, and overripe ones become Spätlese. The house style is fruit with some sweetness carried on very little alcohol, usually 7 to 10 percent, which is why the estate pitches its Kabinetts as food wines, especially at lunch. Müller says the Scharzhofberg Kabinetts in particular develop enormous complexity when they're stored properly, so a young bottle is also a smart one to put away. And it's all he does: nothing but Riesling, all of it from the estate's own vines.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Thai green papaya salad or a mild green curry with chicken, Vietnamese summer rolls with nuoc cham, pork belly bao with pickled cucumber, smoked trout with horseradish cream, crab cakes, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Saar Kabinett profile: green apple, white peach and citrus over a stony, slate-driven minerality. Light-bodied and low in alcohol, it balances gentle off-dry sweetness against fine, racy acidity, finishing long, fresh and clean. Lively when young, this style typically gains honeyed, petrol-tinged complexity with cellaring.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
