If you want to taste the whole estate in a single bottle, this is it. Escheburg is a dry Riesling blended from the four top Enkirch crus, drawing mainly on the blue slate of Ellergrub, so it's essentially a cross-section of the house's finest terroirs. The vines run past 60 years old, some of them ungrafted, and Gernot Kollmann farms organically and ferments dry with wild yeast. A brief skin contact and a rest in old barrels give it texture without any oaky noise. It's long been one of the estate's smartest values and best all-arounders. Four great sites, one very good bottle. [Pre-arrival: expected to arrive mid-July.]

More about Immich-Batterieberg

Few Mosel estates can match this one for history: records reach back to the early tenth century, and the Immich family made wine here for roughly five hundred years. In the 1840s Carl August Immich literally blasted a hillside in Enkirch into terraces, and the resulting Batterieberg is still the estate's calling card. Since 2009 Gernot Kollmann has run the cellar, working old, largely ungrafted Riesling vines in Batterieberg, Ellergrub, Steffensberg and Zeppwingert. Mostly dry, deeply slatey, and full of character.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
