A chance to get familiar with one of Barolo's lesser-known crus. Giacomo Fenocchio is an unsung traditionalist who ages everything in large Slavonian casks and bottles his sites separately, and Flatiron has called his Castellero the perfect vehicle for learning a cru few people know. Located in the commune of Barolo, Castellero tends toward a refined, aromatic, mid-weight style. The 2013 was a glorious, structured classic vintage that Flatiron singled out to show this producer at his best. Now maturing, it drinks well with a decant and will continue to develop.

Antonio Galloni

85 points

"The 2013 Barolo Castellero is dark, heavy and lacking in the signatures that make this Monforte vineyard so compelling, with a roasted quality to the fruit that is out of character for the year." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

90 points

"With long maceration times (up to 40 days), the wines of Giacomo Fenocchio show power and opulence across this set of new releases. The 2013 Barolo Castellero is one of the most expressive of the bunch. The wine shows a higher degree of ripeness with red and darkly saturated fruit flavors. There is even a touch of sweetness here to back up that thesis. This is the most accessible and immediate of the estate's single-vineyard expressions. This is a good near-term option to drinking within the next ten years." —Monica Larner

Jancis Robinson

16 points

"Barolo. Cask sample. Tasted blind. Mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Almost rich cherry fruit on the nose. Supple and mellow with just a medium-weight feel. Grainy tannins on the finish, and already approachable." —Walter Speller

Kerin O'Keefe

95 points

"Woodland berry, new leather, dark baking spice and rose aromas are front and center on this radiant red. It’s well structured and loaded with finesse, delivering Morello cherry, wild strawberry, clove and star anise framed in firm, refined tannins and vibrant acidity. Young and balanced, it will be even better with more bottle age. Drink 2023–2043." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Giacomo Fenocchio

Five generations of Fenocchios have been making wine from their Barolo holdings since 1894. Giacomo took over in 1964 and expanded the estate, then passed the torch to his son Claudio in 1989. They own four prized Cru plots—Bussia, Villero, Castellero, Cannubi—and make Barolo the traditional way: long maceration, no roto-fermentors, only indigenous methods that speak terroir.
