Take a tour of Barolo's crus through one producer's hands. Giacomo Fenocchio is among Flatiron's favorite traditional discoveries, an unsung estate where Claudio Fenocchio farms conscientiously and ages everything in large Slavonian casks, releasing single-cru bottlings that show their sites with rare clarity. This is the Bussia, from Monforte d'Alba: typically the broadest and most generous of his crus, with depth and an earthy power. The 2013 was a glorious, structured classic vintage that Flatiron singled out as the one to show this producer's true potential. Now maturing, with a decant it's drinking well and will keep.

Antonio Galloni

85 points

"The 2013 Barolo Bussia is a fairly innocuous, mid-weight wine with modest depth and concentration. Astringent tannins and green flavors will become more accentuated in time as the fruit begins to fade. Drink it over the next few years." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

92 points

"The 2013 Barolo Bussia shows tight delineation with crisp fruity aromas that are characteristic of this slightly cooler and longer growing season. Sour cherry, dried raspberry and spice lead to a fresh finale with integrated tannins and acidity. This vintage saw a 40-day maceration period in order to add to the aromatic intensity and the structural fiber of the wine. Some 26,000 bottles were produced." —Monica Larner

Jancis Robinson

17.5 points

"Monforte d’Alba. Cask sample. Tasted blind. Concentrated ruby. Pretty nose of cherry and dried fruit. Supple and elegant palate with hints of orange and dried fruit. Polished tannins underneath. Long, and set to become more complex with further bottle age." —Walter Speller

Decanter

92 points

"Lifted nose of raspberries and violets. Rich and concentrated, with supple tannins, this has solid fruit and ample structure, but not at the expense of complexity. Spicy and long."

Kerin O'Keefe

97 points

"Rose, iris, wild berry and baking spice aromas merge with scents of new leather and a balsamic menthol note on this stunning, classically crafted Barolo. The structured, polished palate delivers juicy Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, pipe tobacco and licorice framed in tightly knit, noble tannins and bright acidity. It’s going to just keep getting better and better over the next few decades. Drink 2023–2053." —Kerin O'Keefe

More about Giacomo Fenocchio

Five generations of Fenocchios have been making wine from their Barolo holdings since 1894. Giacomo took over in 1964 and expanded the estate, then passed the torch to his son Claudio in 1989. They own four prized Cru plots—Bussia, Villero, Castellero, Cannubi—and make Barolo the traditional way: long maceration, no roto-fermentors, only indigenous methods that speak terroir.
