First Growth Sauternes in a 375ml bottle, and here's the part people forget: Rieussec says that once opened and kept somewhere cool, the wine holds for several weeks without deteriorating. A glass after Tuesday dinner doesn't mean finishing the bottle that night. Chateau Rieussec lies where the Fargues and Sauternes communes meet, next door to Yquem, and was classified a First Growth (1er Grand Cru) in 1855. The Rothschilds of Lafite have owned it since 1984. The south-facing vineyard sits on sandy gravel with some clay. Yields are tiny: one vine makes roughly one glass of wine. It's made mostly from Semillon affected by botrytis (the 'noble rot' that concentrates sugars and adds depth). The harvest runs six to eight weeks, from September into November, with pickers going back through the vines several times as the rot develops. Serve well chilled.

Antonio Galloni

"Bright, pale yellow-gold. Aromas of very ripe peach, honey and vanilla are a bit youthfully disjointed. Sweet, supple and fat, currently showing more spice than fruit. Finishes broad and spicy, with a suggestion of minerality." —Stephen Tanzer

Robert Parker

"The 2007 Rieussec is a blend of 87% Semillon, 4.5% Muscadelle and 8.5% Sauvignon Blanc picked between 13 September and 31 October. It has an almost Barsac-like bouquet with barley sugar joining the ginger and honeyed notes, quite powerful although I feel this is just going through a sullen patch at the moment. The palate is very pure and balanced with a wonderful seam of acidity that slices through the viscous botrytis fruit, quite spicy on the finish, although it does not possess the persistence of the 2005 or 2009, just cutting away swiftly. Tasted April 2016." —Neal Martin

Jancis Robinson

"Sweet, vaguely sticky nose. Certainly impressive for the sugar level! And there’s an attractive savoury undertow that stops it being sickly. Lots there. Reverberates. Long. Very long. It has that thing that a good Condrieu has: a subtext."

Wine Spectator

96 points

"Balanced and very spicy, with almond paste and apricot. Full-bodied, medium sweet, with a long, fruity, tangy finish. Layered and stylish."

More about Chateau Rieussec

Owned by Rothschild since 1984, this Sauternes First Growth makes wines of astonishing complexity. The oak aging and extended bottle age potential set Rieussec apart—these aren't immediately sweet or cloying, but layered and profound.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Seared foie gras or foie gras torchon on brioche, Roquefort or Stilton with walnuts, apricot or peach tart, crème brûlée, or a lemon-almond cake.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Sauternes profile, here built on botrytised Semillon: apricot, candied orange peel, honey and saffron, with a rich, unctuous body. Fresh acidity keeps the sweetness from cloying, and the finish is long and luscious, with the gentle marmalade bitterness noble rot brings. Rieussec is typically among the richer, more opulent wines of the appellation.
