Sicily has one DOCG—the highest classification in Italy—and it belongs entirely to this region. Gurrieri, a family organic winery in Chiaramonte Gulfi, has been crafting Cerasuolo di Vittoria (literally 'cherry red') from Nero d'Avola and Frappato for generations. The 2024 balances both grapes' personalities: dark berry weight from the Nero d'Avola, delicate florals and red-fruit brightness from the Frappato. It's Sicily distilled into a glass—serious enough to age, inviting enough to drink now with friends.

There is something special happening in southeastern Sicily, where small family estates are reclaiming the land from industrial wine. Gurrieri is one of our favorite discoveries. Siblings Giovanni and Angela Gurrieri run the winery in Chiaramonte Gulfi, in the Cerasuolo di Vittoria zone that is also home to COS and Occhipinti, following parents who grew grapes for more than 50 years. They farm organically, pick by hand and make tiny quantities of Frappato, Nero d'Avola and Grillo. Affordable, honest wines full of Sicilian sunshine without heaviness.
