Pagliarese is a historic estate with deep roots in Chianti Classico, once a revered name before going quiet for decades. Now revitalized under the same family behind Fèlsina, the estate produces wines that capture the rustic elegance of traditional Sangiovese. The Riserva takes things a step further than the normale, with longer aging and more structure, making it a true throwback to classic Tuscan winemaking.

The 2019 vintage is beautifully expressive, with bright cherry, wild raspberry, and hints of dried roses and tobacco. The palate is firm yet refined, with dusty tannins and a core of savory earthiness that lingers through the finish. Compared to its younger sibling, this Riserva has more depth, polish, and the ability to age gracefully—showing the influence of an outstanding vintage marked by balance and concentration.

Perfect alongside bistecca alla fiorentina, aged pecorino, or a rich tomato-based pasta, this is Chianti Classico at its most authentic. It’s drinking well now but will reward patience, evolving into something even more complex over the next decade.

Vineyard
At Castelnuovo Berardenga, southeast from Siena, in the subzone of Pagliarese.
Orientation
320 to 390 meters in elevation, southwest exposure.
Soil
Quartzitic blue-grey sandstone mixed with sand strata, calcareous alberese mixed with alluvial pebbles. Galestro in some of the higher parts of the vineyard.
Viticulture
Hand harvested in the first three weeks of October. Practicing organic.
Vinification
Automatic daily punch-downs during fermentation at 28-30C, followed by 12-15 day maceration. Draining-off after fermentation.
Aging
Aged in mostly 50 HL Slavonian casks for 16 to 20 months followed by at least six months in the bottle before release.
