The 2021 is the 50th vintage of Vasse Felix Cabernet Sauvignon, and the producer marks it as "The 50th Vintage." Vasse Felix is the estate that put Margaret River on the map. Dr Tom Cullity founded it in 1967 as the region's first wine estate. The estate made its first Cabernet in 1972 and has bottled one from every Margaret River vintage since. A year later it won the region's first medal for Cabernet, a Gold at the Perth Wine Show. What we love is the house's refusal to join the "bigger is better" school of Australian red. The aim instead is a sophisticated, intellectual take on Margaret River Cabernet. As is the house practice, the Cabernet is wild-fermented in small batches and basket-pressed; the 2021 blends 86% Cabernet Sauvignon with 14% Malbec and spent 17 months in French oak barriques, 37% of them new. If you think of Aussie Cabernet as a jammy blockbuster, this is a good bottle to change your mind, and a fitting way to mark half a century of Margaret River Cabernet.

Tasting Profile

Expect Margaret River Cabernet in its more restrained style, closer to classic Bordeaux than to a jammy blockbuster: blackcurrant and mulberry fruit with a leafy, bay-leaf edge, plus cedar and gentle spice from French oak. Typically it's medium- to full-bodied, with fine, firm tannins and fresh acidity, and it finishes dry, long and savoury.
