Three months on the skins, and not the grape you'd expect: this is Trebbiano macerated together with Petit Manseng skins, fermented on native yeasts and bottled with next to nothing added. Uruguay is still shorthand for Tannat, so a serious skin-contact white from the far north comes as a surprise — the vines sit at Cerro Chapeu in Rivera, right up on the Brazilian border, at 250 metres, in deep reddish iron-rich sediments of volcanic alluvial origin with the big day-night temperature swings of a continental climate. The Carrau family have been at this a while: ten-plus generations, begun in Catalonia in 1752 and running in Uruguay since 1930, and it was Quico Carrau Pujol who went looking for this site in 1973, working with UC Davis to find somewhere sandy and suitable enough to plant Uruguay's first virus-free vines. Grapes come in by hand in small crates, and the wine goes into bottle with minimal handling. The Margay cat on the label is a painting by the Uruguayan artist Nicolás Sánchez, "Alfalfa" — a nice bit of design on a bottle that doesn't need the help, but earns the attention anyway.

More about Castel Pujol

Castel Pujol is an old family name in Uruguayan wine, and the Folklore wines are what happens when the tenth generation gets hold of it: skin-contact whites, pét-nats and light, juicy reds in place of the country's famously brawny Tannat.

The Carrau family's winemaking roots go back to eighteenth-century Catalonia. Around 1930 the family emigrated to Uruguay and set up in Canelones, near Montevideo, and Castel Pujol became the name of that original winery, Bodegas Carrau, as well as a label for the home market. In the 1970s the family went looking for new ground and planted vines on the red, sandy soils of Cerro Chapeu in Rivera, in the hills along the Brazilian border. Francisco Carrau, a professor of wine chemistry and one of Uruguay's leading authorities on native yeasts, makes the wine at Bodega Cerro Chapeu, and his daughter Pia, its general manager, created the Folklore line.

Folklore is about low-input winemaking and local character. The orange wine is skin-fermented Trebbiano with Petit Manseng skins in the mix, and the red is mostly Tannat fermented with Petit Manseng skins. Expect bright, textured, easy-drinking wines that show a fresher side of Uruguay.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled octopus with smoked paprika, chicken tagine with preserved lemon and olives, roast pork belly, empanadas de carne, or a board of aged sheep's-milk cheese and marcona almonds as an aperitif.

Tasting Profile

Dry, textural rather than heavy, with a light grip of tannin from the skins. Faintly savory, with a mineral edge.
