Herve Joyaux Fabre came to Mendoza from Bordeaux in the early 1990s, part of a family of French wine negociants, and was so taken with the potential for Malbec that he bought up very old vineyards, some planted back in 1908, and built a chateau-style winery. That French sensibility shows in his wines, which marry Mendoza's power with Bordelais finesse. The Gran Reserva Malbec is the serious, age-worthy expression, drawn from his oldest vines and built for the long haul. Expect concentrated wild berry and plum fruit, a little floral lift and licorice spice, and a structured, polished finish. A big, generous Malbec with real elegance behind the muscle.

"The 2023 Fabre Montmayou Gran Reserva Malbec originates from century-old vines and matured for 12 months in first- and second-use barrels. It opens with a dark, slightly rustic nose with earthy, potting-soil aromas, introducing a soft, supple palate. It closes with a round, straightforward finish framed with powdery tannins" —Matthew Luczy

More about Fabre Montmayou

Most South American wine is either very good and priced like premier cru Burgundy, or cheap and anonymous. Fabre Montmayou defies both categories: real artisan wine at prices close to Argentina's industrial brands.

The man behind it is Hervé Joyaux Fabre, a Bordeaux native whose grandfather and great-grandfather owned vineyards in Entre-deux-Mers and Graves and who worked as a négociant himself; he moved to Argentina in the early 1990s, and his wife Diane later joined him as a partner in the business. Rather than plant from scratch, he bought old vineyards, including Malbec planted in the first decade of the 1900s. His winery stands at Vistalba in Luján de Cuyo, about 1,150 meters up and ringed by the first 15 hectares of old Malbec he bought, and the Mendoza wines draw on old-vine sites. A second winery in Patagonia's Río Negro Valley, around 39 degrees south, supplies cooler-climate fruit.

Farming is sustainable and the grapes are picked by hand, then sorted twice, once by bunch and once by berry. What sets the wines apart is a Bordelais taste for elegance and restraint: there's New World fruit, but old vines, altitude and a light hand keep it in check. The range covers Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a bone-dry Torrontés, from the Reserva and Patagonia Barrel Selection bottlings up to the Gran Reserva Malbec.
