Vina Zorzal proves you don't have to spend much to drink something honest and delicious. This Navarra rosado is made from old-vine Garnacha, organically farmed in stony, high-altitude vineyards of clay and limestone, then hand-harvested and fermented with wild yeasts. The bush vines and careful, no-corners-cut winemaking deliver a rosé that's fresh, balanced and just complex enough to keep your interest through a whole meal. A genuine warm-weather workhorse that overdelivers.

More about Vina Zorzal

Bush vines, but no bush-league value. That was our headline the first time we tasted Viña Zorzal, and it still holds. This is organically farmed, old-vine Navarra made with real care, at prices that make it an everyday house wine.

The estate belongs to brothers Xabi, Iñaki and Mikel Sanz, whose grandfather and father ran the family's bodega in Corella, in southern Navarra. In 2007 the brothers set off in a different direction, toward artisanal, single-parcel wines. They began with a Graciano, a low-yielding grape that lost ground after phylloxera and that quality-minded growers are now bringing back. The vineyards around Corella, Cintruénigo and Fitero sit on higher, stony ground of mixed clays and limestone, and there's a lot of old bush-vine Garnacha, some of it about a century old. The vines are certified organic and dry-farmed, with no tilling, no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, and all work done by hand.

Fermentations are spontaneous with native yeasts, the basic Garnacha is made in steel with some whole clusters, and the wines go unfined and unfiltered. The range runs from the juicy Garnacha and a Garnacha rosado to Graciano, Garnacha Blanca and the single-parcel Malayeto. There's also a fun 1-liter Nat'Cool Graciano made with Argentina's Matías Michelini. Expect fresh, crunchy, balanced wines that hold your interest through dinner.
