A legendary single vineyard documented since 1666, in family hands since 1904. Giuseppe Mascarello founded the estate in 1881; Mauro created the iconic Monprivato bottling in 1970. Renato Ratti ranked it among Barolo's ten greatest sites—equivalent to Burgundy Grand Cru status. This 2006 earned 96 points from Galloni, described as "explosive" and "muscular" with layers of complexity. The maturity window runs 2016-2036, so it's drinking magnificently now with decades ahead.

Antonio Galloni

97 points

"The 2006 Barolo Monprivato (magnum) moves us into another register, a register defined by power and textural intensity. Dark fruit, lavender, spice, graphite and crushed rocks open first, before swaths of tannin make themselves felt on the mid-palate and finish. Readers lucky enough to own the 2006 are in for a real treat." —Antonio Galloni

Jancis Robinson

"Fragrant and inviting. Senescent red fruit – but still so much fruit – and a light floral note, roses and rose hips, such tangy sweetness. Leathery and dried cherries on the palate, firm but silky tannins. So gorgeously scented on the nose and palate and just a little bit of grip to the tannins. All in perfect harmony. Opens out to a hint of lavender. Incredibly long. Gorgeous."

Decanter

98 points

"At an alfresco dinner party with friends, this was the unequivocal wine of the night. It captures both greatness of site and singularity of producer, simply haunting in its exquisitely defined nuances of hazelnut, incense, sweet herbs, raspberry tea and truffles. Fluid and racy with crisp acidity, its long-chained, textured tannins caress the mouth. So digestible and drinkable yet complex and detailed, this feels timeless. May very well keep soaring well beyond a decade."

Wine Spectator

93 points

"An elegant style, with a hint of wild herbs giving way to strawberry, eucalyptus, licorice and mineral. Though structured, this is deftly balanced, with a mouthwatering finish and a fine, savory aftertaste."

More about Giuseppe Mascarello

Giuseppe Mascarello's origins trace to 1881 in Monforte d'Alba, now representing over 130 years of Barolo tradition. Mauro Mascarello and his son Giuseppe avoid new French oak entirely, aging in decades-old Slavonian oak botti purchased in the 1950s. These are classically-made Barolos—Monprivato is the crown jewel—that taste like the region's soul distilled into a bottle.
