Everyone knows Clos Cibonne for the rosé. Almost nobody knows they make a red — and this is it. The Deforges family have spent decades building this estate around Tibouren, a rare, ancient, thin-skinned Provençal grape that most of their neighbors tore out years ago in favor of easier, higher-yielding varieties. In red form Tibouren is a completely different animal from the famous flor-aged pink: lighter-framed, savory, herbal, more Mediterranean scrub than fruit bomb. The vineyards are farmed organically and sit close enough to the sea that the salt breeze is part of the equation. This is a red for people who like their reds fresh, savory and a little wild, and it takes a slight chill beautifully. A genuine rarity from one of Provence's true originals.

More about Clos Cibonne

Clos Cibonne is one of the historic Crus Classés of the Côtes de Provence, and it is all about Tibouren, an old Mediterranean grape that André Roux championed here in the early 20th century. His granddaughter Brigitte Deforges and her husband Claude now run the estate. The rosés are Tibouren-based and unlike anything else in Provence: matured in century-old foudres under a veil of yeast called fleurette, giving savory, saline wines that age. Rare doesn't begin to cover it.
