This is a Côtes du Rhône with Châteauneuf-du-Pape in its blood. The fruit comes from La Lionne, a parcel in Sorgues that sits right on Châteauneuf's southern border, plus one other parcel, and a little Syrah from Châteauneuf itself goes into the blend. It comes from Isabel Ferrando, who makes Châteauneuf at Domaine Saint-Préfert. Her daughter Guillemette joined the family winery in 2023, and every wine now carries the Famille Isabel Ferrando name. The 2025 is mostly Grenache with about 15% Cinsault. The grapes are fully destemmed, then fermented and aged in cement with no oak at all, so you taste fruit and place, not wood. The vines are farmed biodynamically. The name comes from Horace's second Epode and means "happy is the man". We can't think of a better motto for an everyday red. It's an easy way into a serious Châteauneuf house without paying Châteauneuf prices.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Bowler Wine has to say about this wine:

Beatus Ille is mostly Grenache blended with about 15% Cinsault from a parcel named, La Lionne, in the Sorgues district, just at the southern border of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and another parcel. It’s blended with a bit of Syrah from Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It’s 100% destemmed and fermented and aged in cement tanks.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled merguez or lamb chops with rosemary; roast chicken with herbes de Provence; ratatouille or a Provençal vegetable tian; sausage and fennel pizza; lentils braised with bacon.

Tasting Profile

Expect the Grenache-led Southern Rhône profile: ripe red cherry and raspberry, a dusting of white pepper and dried garrigue herbs, with Cinsault adding lift and a touch of Syrah giving some dark-fruit depth. Raised in cement with no oak, it's typically medium-bodied, juicy and supple, with soft tannins and a clean, gently spicy finish. Think Châteauneuf-du-Pape in miniature.
