This is the bottle Marcel Richaud calls the domaine's emblematic red, and probably the wine most people know him by. Richaud is a fifth-generation Cairanne grower who founded his domaine in 1974. He was the first in his family to bottle at the estate instead of selling to the cooperative, and he went on to become one of the leaders of the natural wine movement. His Cairanne reds habitually use more Mourvèdre than the appellation technically allows, and they are often made without added sulfur. The 2024 comes in at 14% alcohol. Richaud describes it as a careful blend that shows all the qualities of a Cairanne, with finesse and structure together. (Marcel, by the way, still hang-glides in his 70s; his children Thomas and Claire now carry the domaine on.) If you want to know what Cairanne tastes like in the hands of the grower who made it his life's work, start here.

More about Marcel Richaud

Marcel Richaud, a fifth-generation grower, founded his Cairanne domaine in 1974 and has become the appellation's champion. His natural approach starts in the vines: old goblet-trained vines, newer high-elevation parcels near the Dentelles, and more Mourvèdre than the rules technically allow. Grapes ferment by variety with native yeasts in cement, then age in large neutral casks, unfined and unfiltered, often with no added sulfur. His children Claire and Thomas now work alongside him. Southern Rhône at its most lifted and beautiful.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Lamb shoulder braised with olives and garlic, Provençal beef daube, grilled merguez with harissa, or ratatouille with herbes de Provence.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Cairanne profile, given extra savoury depth by a generous share of Mourvèdre: dark cherry and blackberry, wild herbs, black pepper and a hint of leather. Typically medium- to full-bodied, with ripe, firm tannins and fresh acidity from the old hillside vines, finishing long and spicy. Think a more structured, characterful Côtes du Rhône.
