What is this wine?
Heinrich Spindler is a historic Pfalz estate based in Forst, renowned for precise, terroir-driven Rieslings. Jesuitengarten is one of Forst’s great Grosse Lage vineyards (Germany’s equivalent of Grand Cru), known for its warm, sheltered exposition and sandstone-limestone soils. These conditions yield Rieslings of both ripeness and elegance. The 2023 vintage produced wines with purity, freshness, and excellent structure.

Why get this wine?
Jesuitengarten is often compared to its famous neighbor, Kirchenstück, but it tends to be more approachable in youth while still capable of long aging. Spindler’s version is a benchmark, offering grand cru pedigree at exceptional value compared to other top German Rieslings—or to white Burgundy of similar stature. For collectors, it’s a wine of both immediacy and longevity.

What does this wine taste like?
Expressive and refined, with ripe citrus, peach, and apricot balanced by floral notes and stony minerality. The palate is concentrated yet fresh, with vibrant acidity and a long, saline finish.

When should you drink this wine?
Beautiful already for its fruit and energy, but will gain complexity over the next 10–15 years. Ideal with sushi, shellfish, roast poultry, or spicy Asian dishes.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 94
"The 2023 Riesling Forster Jesuitengarten was made in stainless steel. Yeasty funk still defines the nose. The palate is a picture of ripe, green, juicy zestiness reminiscent of green orange, beautifully pervasive, utterly zesty, concentrated and lip-smacking. The finish is ripe with a long citrus savor." -Anne Krebiehl MW

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
