Immich-Batterieberg, Riesling Trocken Steffensberg, 2024

$59.99

Most of the Mosel's great slopes are gray or blue slate, but Steffensberg is red, and that iron- and copper-rich rock throws off a distinctly spicy, exotic character you won't find in its neighbors. This dry single cru comes from roughly 60-year-old ungrafted vines on those steep red terraces, farmed organically by Gernot Kollmann and fermented dry with wild yeast. It's the estate's point of contrast, all mandarin orange and spicy florals where the blue-slate wines lean cool and mineral. Raised in old wood and built with real depth, it drinks like a premier cru. Red slate is the wild card, and this is your chance to taste why. [Pre-arrival: expected to arrive mid-July.]

More about Immich-Batterieberg

One of the Mosel's oldest wineries, founded by monastery in 911 and traced to documented viticulture back then. Gernot Kollmann bought in 2008 and immediately went full-dry: ambient yeasts, full fermentations, minimal sulfur, five steep vineyards with names like Batterieberg (created literally by explosives in the 1840s). Profoundly dry Riesling made by somebody who thinks.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
