A Pinot Gris Sélection de Grains Nobles from 2001, Alsace's most concentrated sweet-wine category, with more than two decades in bottle already done for you. SGN is the top rung of Alsace dessert wine, made from grapes concentrated by noble rot. Few are made, and fewer still turn up with this much age on them. It comes from Albert Mann in Wettolsheim, a domaine that joins two old Alsace winegrowing families. The Manns have grown grapes since the early 17th century and the Barthelmés, who run the estate today, since 1654. The domaine went biodynamic in 1997, so this 2001 is from the early years of that farming. Back in 1989, an American importer stumbled into their then-tiny cellars by chance and has been bringing the wines over ever since. This is a 375ml bottle meant for a milestone dinner: serve it well chilled, pour small glasses, and let a little go a long way.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Foie gras torchon with toasted brioche; Roquefort or Fourme d'Ambert; washed-rind Munster, the Alsace way; tarte Tatin or a poached-pear tart; apricot clafoutis.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Alsace Pinot Gris SGN profile: noble-rot honey, dried apricot, candied orange peel and quince, with the grape's smoky, spicy edge. Rich and unctuous, lusciously sweet but kept lively by fresh acidity (think Sauternes-level richness, a touch spicier). With long bottle age these wines typically pick up caramel, dried fig and toffee, finishing long and honeyed.
