This is a 1999 Barolo Riserva from Parussi, a cru where we think Bovio makes some of the best wine. With a quarter-century behind it, it gives you a mature look at a vineyard built for the long haul. Parussi is the northernmost cru in Castiglione Falletto, a wide amphitheatre that runs down the west side of the ridge toward La Morra. The Bovio family says it gives structured, tannic, long-lived wines with balsamic notes, and the west-facing slopes add ripe fruit and the velvety tannins Castiglione is known for. That's exactly the kind of Barolo that pays you back for waiting. Bovio is a small family estate in La Morra, now in its third generation, and it started out making wine for the family's own restaurant, Ristorante Bovio, which is still open. That's a good reminder that Barolo belongs at the dinner table, not on a trophy shelf. Gianfranco Bovio took over his father Alessandro's vineyards in the 1970s, and today his daughter Alessandra and her husband Marco Boschiazzo run the estate.

More about Bovio

Bovio is a fourth-generation winemaker in La Morra, practicing organic growing and producing Barolo from 100% Nebbiolo. The signature 'tar and roses' profile—wet tar, dried rose, cherry, tobacco, earth, mineral—is the calling card of great Nebbiolo, and Bovio captures it with clarity. Using wild yeast fermentation in stainless steel and natural aging, they create wines that are classical without being stuck in time. This is Barolo made by someone who understands the grape's complexity.

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo), tajarin pasta with butter and shaved white truffle, roast pheasant or hare, porcini risotto, aged Castelmagno or Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic profile of an aged Barolo Riserva: dried cherry and dried violets giving way to tar, leather, truffle and the balsamic notes Parussi is known for. Nebbiolo's firm tannins typically soften with long bottle age into a velvety, savoury texture, while lively acidity carries the wine to a long, earthy finish.
