2001 was good enough for Coutet to make Cuvée Madame, its rare selection reserved for great vintages with textbook conditions. This is the classic Château Coutet from that same harvest. The estate sets 2001 apart for its "nobleness and racy richness," which is to say richness with real lift to it. Coutet has been a Premier Grand Cru Classé since 1855. Its clay and limestone soils don't hold heat, so Coutet usually picks up to ten days after estates in Sauternes proper: thirty to forty days of hand-picking in successive passes through the Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle, with the pressed juice fermented in barrel. The Baly family has owned the château since 1977, the latest chapter in a winemaking history that officially begins in 1643. Serve it properly cold, and don't feel obliged to finish the bottle: an opened Sauternes holds in the fridge for a week or more.

Antonio Galloni

92 points

"From one of the few remaining bottles at the estate (unbelievably!), the 2001 Coutet has a generous bouquet with yellow plum, Seville oranges, white peach, chai and orange blossom. The palate is viscous on the entry, more so than the 1996. It's concentrated with good depth and weight. Maybe it could benefit from a little more acidity and nerve on the finish? But this represents a fine Coutet nonetheless, just pipped by the 1996. Tasted from an ex-château bottle served at the estate." —Neal Martin

Jancis Robinson

17.5 points

"A little smoky and indistinct on the nose – smudgy. Rose-petal scents. Very heavy and sweet. Super rich. Thick and dense."

Wine Spectator

93 points

"Lots of lemon and maple syrup on the nose, with dried apricots. Full-bodied, with a very sweet and rich palate of candied lemon and orange rinds and a long finish. Beautifully sticky. Not quite as exciting as from barrel but clearly outstanding."

Roquefort or Stilton, foie gras terrine with toasted brioche, tarte Tatin, apricot frangipane tart, or a spicy Thai red curry.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Coutet take on Sauternes: honey, apricot, candied citrus and orange peel from botrytised Semillon, with a touch of vanilla and toast from barrel fermentation. The palate is rich and sweet, but bright, lively acidity keeps it elegant rather than heavy, and the finish is long, with marmalade and a hint of spice.
