Chave's white Hermitage is the rarer, less talked-about half of the domaine's Hermitage, and this is a 2005 in magnum: a bottle for a full table and a real occasion. The family has made wine since 1481, sixteen generations of it, and Jean-Louis still works the traditional way, with low yields, full ripeness, minimal oak and no filtering. The white is usually built on Marsanne from Péléat, a nearly century-old monopole, alongside parcels like Rocoules, L'Hermite and Maison Blanche, with about 20% Roussanne for aromatic complexity. The exact proportions change every year. Chave's view is that Hermitage is defined by a harmony of terroirs, not by any single vineyard. So each parcel is farmed, picked and vinified separately, and the wine really gets made in the blending. Rocoules brings backbone and staying power, Péléat finesse, L'Hermite lift and precision, and Maison Blanche texture and freshness. It's made in limited quantities and built to age, which is exactly why a big bottle with this much time behind it is worth hunting down.

Antonio Galloni

95 points

"The 2005 Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Blanc is everything you’d expect from a great Northern Rhône white from this famous producer. Garrigue, beeswax, lemon, shiso leaf, poached apricot, pear and many other aromas and flavors wafted out of the glass. What you have to love about this wine is how the contributions of both the old-vine Roussanne and the Marsanne in the blend are clearly recognizable, and the sum is more than the individual parts. The wine overpowered some of the dishes I ate on this night but actually married better with the tofu in casserole and the slightly gelatinous rice soup than I had imagined." —Ian D'Agata

Robert Parker

96 points

"The 2005 Hermitage blanc is an amazing effort that defines the classic style of white Hermitage. It offers hints of marzipan, roasted hazelnuts, quince, licorice, honeysuckle, citrus oil, and wet stones. It is a superbly concentrated and powerful wine."

Wine Spectator

98 points

"Dense and packed, but amazingly bright at the same time, this offers dried papaya and pineapple fruit backed by a paraffin note, with fresh floral, white peach and heather honey notes. Then the long, super stony finish takes over, and sails on nearly endlessly. This has power, precision and refinement all together."

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Lobster with beurre blanc, roast chicken with morels and cream, veal blanquette, or seared scallops with brown butter. Aged Comté on the cheese board.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Marsanne-led white Hermitage profile: ripe apricot, pear and quince, with honey, beeswax and almond, plus a floral lift from the Roussanne. Full-bodied and broad, with gentle acidity and a firm mineral backbone rather than overt oak, it finishes dry, long and savoury. Mature examples typically lean toward hazelnut and dried fruit.
